The Jennifer Pearson Terell Refugee Award for Continued Studies

Application Deadline

The application deadline for the refugee awards is January 31st of each year. Successful applicants will be notified within six weeks of the application deadline.

Award Description and Criteria

The Jennifer Pearson Terell Refugee Award for Continued Studies, in the amount of $4,000, is for a student who:

  • entered Canada as a refugee
  • has completed at least one year in an academic or vocational program at a post-secondary institution in BC
  • has previously received a TEAL Charitable Foundation (TCF) Student Refugee Award

Application Requirements

Applicants for this award are required to submit:

  1. One 300-word essay answering the following questions:
    • Why did you choose this post-secondary program?
    • How will completing your program make a difference in your life?
    • What are your plans after you complete your program?
  2. Two Letters of Reference:
    • One from an instructor/professor/teaching assistant regarding the applicant’s post-secondary academic performance
    • One from another member of the community, such as an academic counselor/advisor, supervisor, employer, etc. regarding the applicant’s contributions since beginning their post-secondary studies
  3. A recent transcript from the applicant’s post-secondary program showing academic progress
  4. A completed application form by January 31st.

Disbursement of Funds

  • Funds will be disbursed as follows:
    • The recipient must continue post-secondary education and the funds must be disbursed within 12 months of acceptance of the award, except upon receipt of a written request for extension due to unforeseen circumstances.
    • The recipient must submit official tuition receipts from a BC post-secondary institution prior to the disbursement of funds.
    • Disbursements will only be made after the institution’s deadline date for withdrawal from the program.

Please be aware that you will be asked if you are receiving funds from another source, such as government grants, scholarships, or awards from other charities or foundations at the time of your receipt submission. Receiving funds from more than one source to cover the same expense is not allowed.

Application Submission

Applications for the refugee awards must be submitted by January 31st.

Completed online applications will be submitted directly to the TCF.  If, however, you are unable to upload or copy and paste any required document(s) into this form, please email the document(s) to tcf.admin@bcteal.org. In the subject line of your email with the documents, include your name and the line, ‘JPT Refugee Award for Continued Studies Application”
